On a humid summer morning in Columbia SC, I visited Patti and Josh to photograph their sweet newborn baby girl at home. Patti, the beautiful new mama, had the most sweet and calming presence. In every interaction with her daughter, you could sense that she was born to be a mother. Though Josh, the proud new dad, was more quiet and reserved, the sweet way he looked at his daughter showed just how in love he was. At the start of our session, he took the time to cut a beautiful flower from the Rose of Sharon bush for his daughter, a quiet gesture that spoke volumes. I’m so honored that I was able to be there with them at their beautiful home on the farm to photograph so many sweet moments like this!
Lifestyle Newborn Session at Home
When Patti and I were planning their newborn session, we kept coming back to the idea of simplicity. She told me that many of her friends who had children told her that they regretted not having newborn photos taken, and it was important to her to make sure that they found a photographer who would capture this new season of life for their family! As a newborn photographer, I love to focus on the story of this new season of life and document all the little details that are so easy to forget.
When she and Josh were expecting, they were eager to see who their daughter would favor and which features she inherited from each of them! Even though she was only a few weeks old during our session, I could already tell that she has Patti’s gorgeous red hair and many of Josh’s features—a wonderful combination of both of her parents. Their darling baby girl slept almost the entire session, curled up against her mom and dad during photos in the sweetest little outfits and headbands, many of which were special gifts from friends and family.
Life on the Farm
We spent most of our time together in the baby’s nursery. It’s a gorgeous, neutral colored room with a farm theme, which was perfect considering that Patti and Josh they live on a 104 acre farm in northern Richland County with two goats, a sheep—and of course, their two dogs! Patti and Josh have two sweet Dobermans who wanted to be nearby during our session and keep a protective eye over both mom and their new little sister!
One of the best things about lifestyle newborn sessions at home is photographing a family in the place they’re most comfortable. This means our sessions are so much more relaxed; being at home also means that your family can easily reach the clean diapers or a quick snack, or just sit in the comfortable chair you love. There’s nothing more lovely than having photos that capture the story of this new season of life in the place where you are writing this new chapter of you story. 💙
Patti and Josh—thank you so much for asking me to capture your lifestyle newborn session on your beautiful Columbia farm! I’m so honored that you trusted me to document this new season of life for your family. Your daughter so sweet, and I can’t wait to see how she grows up over the years! Sending you all a big hug!
